What I am Reading Now: Anthony Bourdain's Hungry Ghosts
In the process of conducting research on Japanese ghost stories known as, obake, I came across Anthony Bourdain’s final publication, Hungry Ghosts: Tales of Fear and Food from Around the World.
Published posthumously in late 2018, Hungry Ghosts, is a graphic novel of obake, yokai (a catchall for Japanese ghosts and goblins), and yurei (like yokai, but always wanting something.) Like many admirers, gastronomes, foodies, and enthusiasts, I miss Bourdain’s globetrotting food adventures, his bravery diving into the hottest chili pots, his sense of humor with locals, and the introspective tenderness that he conveyed - reminding all of us of our universal connection. So, coming across Hungry Ghosts was not only unexpected, but somehow refreshing as we get to see Bourdain “play” with food and ghost stories in a way that is sure to feed your inner goth.
In collaboration with Joel Rose and Leonardo Manco, Hungry Ghosts is beautifully illustrated, contains a glossary, and recipes! For those interested in cooking Tokyo Ramen, Classic Meatballs, Osso Buco, Saffron Risotto, or Pan-Seared Duck Breast with Red Cabbage, there’s a recipe for you (ghosts not included.)
